A friend of mine is a high school theater teacher and is doing the Spongebob Squarepants Musical next year. She asked if I would be able to make her a version of the crochet cape that is given to Patrick the Starfish when he is declared to be the prophet of the shrimp. I can't crochet, so I am having to make up a pattern that works for what is needed and what I can do. I will be making a test version of the cape which will be in colors chosen to fit a FiberKind Ilvermorny class and then I will be making the final version in the original colors. The first picture is the original cape from the Broadway production and the second is the designer's drawing. Both were found on Twitter.

The test cape is finished! The emphasized star isn't quite how I would like it but that may be because of the scale of the smaller cape. I may play around with that a bit to see if I can make it look more like a star. I will be getting the yarn for the final one soon, so I am excited!

I finally heard back from the director so I decided I'd better get off my butt and get the test finished! I've started the hardest part, the duplicate stitch for the emphasized star. But once that is done, the test is done and I can get going on the real one once the yarn for it gets here!

I've gotten a lot done this week because I realized that with school starting soon, the play will be cast soon and the cape will be needed soon! I have finished all 5 sections and blocked them, but the ends are still curling up so I will need to see if I can fix that. I steam-blocked all the sections before joining them and they stayed flat for a while, but then started curling again. I may need to do some tests with killing the acrylic and see if that works and if not, maybe I will need to thread a wire through the bottom or something. I have attached the sections and finished the top so now I need to seam the sections together and weave in the remaining ends. Once that is done, I will see what I can do to get the ends to stop curling and do the duplicate stitch to make the orange section to stand out as more of a star shape.

I have finished the second section and started on the third. The picture isn't great because I had to take it on my too-small desk, as my bed is currently occupied, but you get the idea. Once I finished the second section, I realized that I wasn't positive whether I could block the cheap acrylic to make the points would be as pointy as I want them. I did a small test knit of the chevron pattern with the same yarn and needles and steam blocked it and it was quite successful! I guess I probably should have done that BEFORE finishing 2 complete sections, but better late than never!

I had to have surgery, so my progress has slowed considerably. I have cast on section 2 but only have a few rows done on it.

I have finished the revised section 1 for my Potions Cape (test for the Patrick Cape) and the size is MUCH better for a 12 to 13-year-old kid. It is 30" long, 12" wide at the bottom, and 6" wide at the top. I will be joining the sections just after the beginning of the white (final) section so the neckline will not be 30" around. There will be more decreases after the sections are joined and I am thinking I will do an I-cord bind-off so the tie will be more secure than if I just sew it on. I am doing the test at the smaller end and will have that to show the director as the sample, then I will be able to adjust the size of the final cape to suit the actor playing Patrick once he has been cast.

I talked to my friend the director to see whether the length of the completed section would be too long, and I am very glad I did. My son is 5'10" and the current length hangs about as far over his hand as the original in the picture (without the fringe) but, my friend is doing this production entirely with 12 and 13-year-olds, not high schoolers! So, I am going to frog the whole section and decrease the length by 6-10". I'm not sure yet whether I am going to make it smaller by decreasing the needle size or just by removing some rows. I need to go over average body measurements for 12 and 13-year-olds and see if I think the circumference needs to go down some as well. I might talk to my friend again and see if she has a few kids in mind for the part and can give me an idea of whether they are almost adult-sized 13-year-olds or almost child-size 13-year-olds.

I have finished the first section of the cape! This section used 136.87 gr or 305.94 yds of yarn. The length apx 46” and the width at the widest is 18” and 7½” at the top. It is longer than I had intended, so I will be talking to the director to see whether it will be too long or not. The width is on par with what it should be.
